"This “third-wave” feminism is way too ironic for me. As Levy points out, things that were once objects of oppression are now emblems of sexual liberation. It feels like our whole culture is one big lap dance for men. AND- if you speak out against porn for feminist reasons (as I have done at womens studies conferences and in class) everyone immediately assumes that you are anti-sex, you’re religious and conservative. It’s annoying. I don’t understand the whole “empowerment” rhetoric that surfaces when pornography discussions take place. If our sexuality is so liberating– why does it all look the same? How commercial has sex become that we can now literally buy sexiness by going to the right stores… like victoria’s secret. It’s really sad that sex (an awesome activity that feels great) has become hijacked by the porn industry. It’s the opposite of liberation. Essentially, if you want to be “sexy” then you have to look and act in a very rigid defined way. I can’t wait until the mainstream discussions of feminism and sex move beyong the “personal empowerment” rhetoric because that’s really a waste of time and it’s not measurable. It’s stupid and is merely a tool to once again delegitimize feminism."
